An drinking to be done while on Scotland duty will have to be down to the Tartan Army

Craig Levein IScotland players will have to wait to have a drink when playing under Craig Levein. The national manager has laid down the law and obviously does not want anything to distract the players from what they are paid to do; win games. The George Burley era was marred by indiscipline towards the end and results on the pitch did nor distract a disappointed fan base from what they thought was lack of effort. Levein wiped the slate clean when he took over from Burley but gathered his squad together on Sunday night to lay down the ground rules for his time in charge. Part of Levein's standard disciplinary code is a ban on alcohol when the players are on duty and James McFadden, who is confident of shaking off a groin injury in time for Wednesday night, welcomed the move. The Birmingham City striker said: "I don't think anyone has any major problems not being able to have a drink. We are only here for a short period of time. I think it's right to have a drink at the right times, if you want to because some players don't drink at all. But the manager has his own way of doing things and the players will stick to that."

Levein's assistant, Peter Houston, claims Levein is simply taking his principles, which appeared to work for him in club football, into the international arena. Houston said: "Craig has his own ideas about how he wants to manage a football team and the Scotland team is no different. I've seen him do it at Hearts, Leicester and Dundee United so nothing new in that sense. We met everybody on Sunday night and what a manager does right away is he lays a marker out - this is how he works, this is what we are going to do and this is what what we are not going to do. In a nice sense, in a friendly environment just before dinner, Craig mentioned a couple of things that he likes to get done. It was nothing serious, just a gentle chat about what we do around the hotel. If you're asked to be in your rooms by a certain time, then we do it, just little things like that. There wasn't an awful lot mentioned about discipline but one thing Craig doesn't allow any squad to do is to have a drink. We're here to work. The biggest thing for us is to get to the European Championship. There will be time, if we qualify, to party. "

McFadden is confident that under Levein Scotland can deliver some good results against Lithuania, Czech Republic, Spain and Liechtenstein in the EURO2012 qualifying campaign. The Scotland squad make their first steps on the campaign trail in September away to Lithuania.  McFadden said: "We have always had a decent bunch of players but we need to believe. We need to believe and we need to have confidence, it's a big part of football. If you are playing with confidence, it's easier, you play better. We just need to put what's happened in the past behind us and carry on. Obviously we need to win more games and get more points. But we need to be hard to beat and make sure we are battling for every ball and every point. We didn't start well in the last campaign and we have a tough opener in this one. We need to make sure that we are prepared and play to the level that we can do and we should be okay."
