Changable Like The Wind

It used to be that you played for your country of birth and waited to be asked. Now players appear to be able to ask for transfers and tout themselves for a game.
Is there nothing in a players mind when it comes to country allegiance? Is it right to switch just when it suits you? Motherwell winger Jim O'Brien is the latest player to say that he is willing to revert his allegiance from the Republic of Ireland to Scotland. O'Brien has represented both countries and has caps for under-19 and under-21 level (Republic of Ireland) after initially representing Scotland Under-17s before being overlooked for future squads. The winger played for a while under national coach Craig Levein during a loan spell at Dundee United and would welcome a call from the Scotland manager. O'Brien said: "He's got my number so I'll be happy with a conversation. It's something that came up and I spoke to my agent about it. It's a hard decision because I'm proud to say I have played for Ireland and I have played for Scotland as well. But it's a good chance for me and something I will need to think long and hard about."
The Vale of Leven-born player has been in good form for Motherwell in recent months and could be an option for Levein. O'Brien, who qualifies for the Republic of Ireland through his grandfather, added: "I hold Craig Levein in the highest regard. He's a great manager, I worked with him at Dundee United. If he was to get in touch, I will take it from there. But right now it's just talk, for all I know he doesn't want me in the squad. I'm just focusing on my football just now and trying to do my best for Motherwell and everything else will take care of itself." |
