Aberdeen Out To Avoid A Whitewash

Aberdeen hope to stop Rangers taking all 12 points from their encounters this season. With a chance of UEFA Cup football in their hands, they do not want to rely on events elsewhere.
Aberdeen are not letting up just yet despite there only being one game left in their season. That one game is against Rangers which could have something to do with the determination shown by the players in training last week. Manager Jimmy Calderwood and his side know a win today would see them finish in third place and secure a place in the UEFA Cup next season. The Dons are desperate to qualify for Europe for the first time in five years and Calderwood is sure that the incentive will go a long way to helping them fulfil their ambition. He said: "In training over the last few days there have been times where I have had to stop it as there were arguments and tussles, all in good spirit mind, but it shows the boys are keen to win. I think it's great that they have that determination and you do need a bit of aggression. On Friday we cut it short about 15 minutes from the end because the players had worked so hard and there were a few knocks here and there, but it was a joy to watch. As I have said many times, they are a great bunch and you can see in them how important this is. Sometimes on a Monday morning when they come in, it may be a little low-key and with something like this coming up you don't want that, but it definitely hasn't been low-key this week. If we were to lose it would be a massive disappointment, however we are going out there on home turf with a capacity crowd behind us to win the game and I know that every single one of the lads is 100% up for it."
Aberdeen have not done well against Ranger this season having lost on each of the three occasions with only one goal for and six goals against. Calderwood insists his players must tighten up at the back today if they are to have any hope of breaking their disappointing run against the Ibrox side. He said: "We just have to make sure that we go out there and get stuck in from the kick-off like we have done in the last few games. We cannot gift them goals like we have done in other games against them this season and from the outset we will be giving it everything." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
