Pre-season training can be hard if the players have not behaved over their break. Hibs players have learned their lesson.

Hibs manager Tony Mowbray is glad to see that his players have learnt their close-season lesson. He was stunned at the fitness levels of his players when he first arrived at Easter Road. Twelve days after taking over from Bobby Williamson two years ago, Mowbray claims he was hamstrung in his quest to make a good start to his Easter Road career by the poor shape of the squad he inherited. With Hibs starting their competitive season a month before anybody else he was pleased to see things have improved. Sunday sees Hibs enter their second Intertoto Cup where they will play their second round, first leg tie against Dinaburg at home.

Mowbray said: "We are 10 days into our training but the players came back with massively different fitness levels than two years ago. They were lower than the standards I was used to when I was at Ipswich Town. We would test the players before they went away for the summer and the first day they returned back. At Ipswich Darren Bent would run a mile in four minutes and 20 seconds on the first day back but when we came here we had players who were walking after half a mile. So it was a bit of a difference and we needed to get something sorted out. I don't know what went on before I came here and I don't know if they went away for the summer with training programmes but they have in the last two years. I want every player to have three or four weeks of total rest when the season finishes, relax on the beach and catch some sun. But they've got to start working again because this is their jobs, they are footballers so I expect them to come back on day one in shape. And to be fair, the players have come back in decent shape, as they did last season."
