Confidence Is The Key

Mark McGhee has instilled a belief in his squad that they can play football. Will his magic work when points are at stake?
Motherwell striker Ross McCormack thinks the Steelmen fans have seen their first glimpse of "a new Motherwell" under new manager Mark McGhee. McCormick opened the scoring in his side's 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with visitors Millwall which will have done nothing to dampen his team-mates confidence going into the new season under new management. McGhee took over, with assistant manager Scott Leitch, from Maurice Malpas, under whom Motherwell finished a disappointing 10th last season. Malpas quit when he was told Leitch would be his new assistant. McCormack said: "The new regime has instilled a belief in the boys' ability that we can get down and pass the ball. I think we've seen a new Motherwell in terms of passing and moving and not being afraid to try things. We played along the lines of a 4-3-3 formation in the first half, with the front three being given licence to interact, get on the ball and make things happen, and I think the boys enjoy that a lot more than a basic 4-4-2."
McCormack became Malpas' first signing when he joined Motherwell from Rangers a year ago, but missed much of last season with a virus and then injuries. Now he wants to make a fresh start after suffering a difficult year on the sidelines. He signalled his intentions by sweeping home the opening goal on the stroke of half-time. He said: "I had missed a chance just before that, so to see that go in was a bit of a relief, and I'll just take it on from here. Last season it was one thing after another for me, but hopefully this season I can stay healthy and injury-free and get a first full season here under my belt. When I signed here I was looking forward to it and I played the first couple of games, but then I got the virus. I played the last couple of games of last season and scored a couple of goals, but I just wanted it over so that I could get a rest and come right back at it this year. I haven't set myself any targets this time around - I just want to establish myself in the team first and foremost, and then I think the goals will come." |
