Players always say that they supported their new team as a youngster and dreamt of playing for them one day. Can Roy Carroll make his dream come true?
Goalkeeper Roy Carroll has made his dream to Rangers, the club he supported as a boy, and it is down to him to make it work. His international manager, Nigel Worthington, believes the move can re-ignite his career at Ibrox after leaving West Ham. Carroll hopes to make a fresh start in Scotland following a troubled spell in London, where he was blighted by personal problems last season. Worthington, who has succeeded Lawrie Sanchez as manager, will be monitoring the player's progress as he prepares for his first game in charge of the national side. Carroll has a chance to improve on his 19 caps, with regular Northern Ireland number one Maik Taylor dropping down the pecking order at Birmingham. Worthington said: "Roy has an opportunity at a great club to go and try to establish himself. We all know Roy has the ability and now he is at a place where he wants to be. We would like to see him get on with his career after his problems."
It will not be stroll right into the first team for Carroll. He faces competition for the number one jersey at Ibrox from Allan McGregor, who looks set to start the season as Walter Smith's first choice, and Graeme Smith, who joined from Kilmarnock recently. Worthington is optimistic the move will turn out well for Carroll, providing he continues to work at his game. He explained: "To be somewhere where you want to be is one thing; to push yourself through the pain barriers to get into the side and stay there is something else. That is what Roy has got to go and do now." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
