Heavy Price Paid For Penalty Box Antics

It is not everyday that you get three penalties awarded against you. Kilmarnock will need to be careful when such things will really count.
Kilmarnock gave away three penalties last night when they played Nottingham Forest at Rugby Park. Manager Jim Jefferies is hoping his squad have now learnt some penalty box etiquette for the season ahead. Grant Holt scored all three penalties, two conceded by Frazer Wright and one by David Lilley, to give the Coca-Cola League One club a comfortable 3-0 lead by the 50th minute. Killie managed to pull back a single consolation goal thanks to Colin Nish. Jefferies said: "It's one thing our players complaining, saying that the Forest players went down easily when they were touched - but they have to learn not to let them travel too far in to the box. But as far as our outfield play was concerned, our movement was good, we passed the ball well - and our work-rate was excellent. I don't think they created many chances, and we dealt with everything in behind us. They are a decent side and they worked hard as well."
The game may have had a different outcome if Nish had scored from a wonderful fifth-minute chance. Midfielder Allan Johnston sent in a perfectly-weighted through-ball to the lanky striker who was then clean through on goal. However, Nish hesitated before slamming an unconvincing shot from 12 yards straight at the legs of Forest goalkeeper Paul Smith. Jefferies said: "We should have taken lead before they scored. It's the best we have played in pre-season - but we knew that, because we had a lot of players back. We played the team that played a lot last year, and it was a great work-out for us. We have improved in our last two or three fixtures and we are working towards the new season." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
