Local sponsorship has allowed the Dundee derby to go ahead with a prize available for bragging rights before the season starts.

In the pre-season Dundee derby on July 22nd both sides will be playing for the newly sponsored Evening Telegraph Challenge Cup. The game was sponsor-less as the City of Discovery Campaign withdrew permission to use the trophy presented to the winners last year. Together with Radio Tay, the Telegraph stepped in to ensure the game had something to play for. It also allowed tickets to be set at £12 for adults, £6 for a first child and £2 for each subsequent child.

Dundee Chief Executive Dave MacKinnon is looking forward to the first derby since his return to the club. He said "Derby games are always special, but the Dundee derby has a flavour and atmosphere of its own and I am sure this one will be no different. We are absolutely delighted that the Tele has come on Board to sponsor the match and come up with a trophy – fans of both clubs rely on the paper's sports coverage for the day-to-day news of their team and this is a good example of a local newspaper being in tune with its local community. Others can call it a friendly or a pre season warm up, but this is Dundee and the minute this game kicks off both sides will be giving 100% and more to make sure the Evening Telegraph Challenge Cup is the first trophy of the season in the cabinet. "

Derek Robertson, Dundee United Director said, "
Both clubs are delighted that the Evening Telegraph has responded in this way. Local derbies are very special occasions, especially in Dundee, and both sets of fans are already looking forward to the game. Having a trophy to present to the winners at the end of the game gives it an added dimension. Both clubs are very proud to come from Dundee and to work closely in the local communities. We have been proud to represent the City of Dundee over the years and believe that this day will help to further raise the profile of the City. We are delighted therefore that such a well known and respected local company has agreed to sponsor the event."

The day will also allow the fans to play as members of ArabTRUST meet Dee4Life in what will be a real ‘friendly' game Both supporters' trusts will be announcing details on how to apply to play in the near future. Doors open at 12pm on the day, with a special Soaperstars team challenging a combined Dundee & Dundee United '
Legends' side. The fans' derby has a 2pm kick off, with the main derby scheduled for a 3.15pm kick off. Various other activities will take place on the day. Tickets will go on sale from both clubs early next week.
